What do cats need to survive

Interestingly, feral cats have always been able to survive the harsh environmental conditions they inhabit. Then, how do feral cats survive?

This is what cats need to survive

1. Rely on Survivor Instinct

Wild cats are carnivorous animals that are accustomed to living independently in an area. That is, most of a cat's life is spent in individual movements. Whether it's, while looking for food, hunting or hiding.

This means that when cats live alone in an area, cats have a much higher chance of survival than dogs. This conclusion leads to the nature of cats who have complete independence and a dependable survival instinct.

From this explanation, it can be concluded that cats survive by following the survival instincts inherited from their ancestors. Cat instincts will guide cats in finding nesting places, looking for water, hunting for food, looking for shelter to breed.

Cats in survival mode don't recognize humans as protective creatures. They regard humans as predators bigger than them. Because of this, feral cats usually don't want to be touched or approached by humans.

2. Find a Warm and Cozy Nesting Place

Climate change is one of the deadliest threats to feral cats. Especially when it rains, storms, floods and earthquakes. Cats can die instantly if they can't live independently.

How feral cats survive changing weather by seeking shelter. A stray cat's shelter or egg-laying area usually has more than one. Can be on the roof of the house, tunnels, parks, narrow alleys to empty houses uninhabited.

As long as the place can protect the feral cats from the threat of cold, wind, and predators, that's okay. And because feral cats often move around quietly and alone, cats don't have to worry about changing shelters. This is fine!

In choosing shelter, cats rely on their survival instincts and body's thermoregulatory abilities. As long as the cat feels safe and the cat's body is warm, feral cats will mark the place as a comfortable nest. And in the future, stray cats will often visit the place to just take a nap or spend the night there.

3. Finding Fresh Water Sources

Armed with a keen sense of smell, feral cats can find dozens of sources of sterile drinking water in their environment. Wild cats can drink from river water, pond water, rain water to tap water. And for feral cats, none of this is a problem. Because surely somewhere, there is a water source that can be accessed.

Cats use their survival instincts, to look for fresh water sources to meet their needs. Because without water, feral cats can only live up to 1 week. So, water is the main source of life for feral cats.

After finding the location of a water source, feral cats usually mark the area. And every day, at a certain time, he would come to that location to drink. If the water source at one point runs out, the stray cat will immediately access another water source that has been marked. It is a wild cat's instinct to survive in the wild.

4. Hunting for Food

After getting a water source, the wild cat's life has begun to calm down. Because he's not going to die of thirst next week. However, it is not enough. Feral cats need to get food. Because without food, feral cats do not have the energy to survive. Wild cats can only survive without food for 3-4 weeks.

Wild cats usually hunt for food in a carnivorous predator style. Wild cats will hunt mice, rabbits, chickens, birds, insects, fish to snakes. In essence, cats will turn into true predators when in the wild.

Note: Feral cats are very picky when it comes to finding nesting places. Even if a stray cat feels a little disturbed by the presence of another animal, it continues to move. This is the most effective form of independence and a feral cat survival method.
