However, not all mobile readers are created equal. Some only process credit cards while others connect to sophisticated POS software.

So which products and services are right for your business? We put Square at the top of our list because it's not only a great entry point, but it also comes with POS addons. But we've also picked out some other great readers worth your consideration.

This is a free credit card reader app

  1. Box: Best overall mobile credit card reader
  2. Shopify: Best for pop-up shops
  3. Clover Go with National Processing: Lowest transaction fees
  4. QuickBooks Chip Reader
  5. PayPal Zettle: Most payment options

1. Box: Best overall

For a low cost, simple, free reader and easy to set up, and funding as fast as a day, Square is the best overall choice for small businesses that need a fast, affordable, and user-friendly way to accept credit card payments on the go.

The Square Reader and Square mobile apps for iOS and Android are among the most recognized and popular mobile credit card processors available—and for good reason.

With Square, you get a free card swipe reader and access to Square's free mobile point-of-sale (mPOS) app. Square costs are not the cheapest—but they are the simplest. You pay a fixed 2.75% for all credit card transactions with no additional fees per transaction or monthly subscription.

2. Shopify: Best for pop-up shops

allow online small business owners to try a new revenue stream: direct sales. If you're one of the tens of thousands of online retailers that sell art, clothing, or jewelry—for example—setting up a booth or kiosk can increase your brand and your bottom line.

The Shopify platform has long provided a place for retailers to sell their goods online, but did you know that it also offers a direct selling solution?

With Shopify's powerful mobile app, online store, and mobile card reader, you can start selling products and processing payments wherever your customers are.

Face-to-face transactions on the Basic package incur a 2.7% fee, while online rates start from 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction.

These fees put Shopify in the more expensive column compared to some of the other brands we reviewed. But for the occasional direct sale, it's a good investment.

Plus, Shopify offers lower fees when you upgrade your plan. For example, the $79 per month plan has a face-to-face fee of only 2.5%. If you are planning to expand your physical retail presence and set up a more permanent store, this plan is very affordable.

The Shopify app and reader works with iOS and Android mobile devices and accepts all major credit cards. The online reviews of the app are mediocre, but you can access Shopify customer support 24/7.

The bottom line is that if you're thinking of testing a physical presence for your growing online store, Shopify is an excellent choice.

3. Clover Go with National Processing

You can sign up for their service for a very low monthly fee of $9.95 per month. After registering, you can purchase a mobile reader.

National Processing actually sells a lot of different mobile processors. They will even give you one for free if you sign up for a new account and it has a volume of $10,000 per month. Their free mobile reader is great, but we recommend buying the Clover Go mobile reader yourself. Clover Goreader integrates with Clover's powerful mobile POS software.

Also, if you want to expand beyond mobile, Clover has a state-of-the-art line of POS devices including their Flex machine. Clover Flex can be purchased through National Processing and is a complete POS system that also has cellular capabilities. This is a solid upgrade that lets you combine a mobile device with the power of a POS system.

Of course, we shouldn't forget to mention the National Processing side of this offer: very low bid rates. National Processing has rates as low and even lower than 0.18% + $0.10. You can get a lower rate if you have a high order volume. That means you pay less because your business is more successful. Not a bad deal if you ask us.

When you combine the powers of National Processing and Clover, you get the best two-headed processing dragon. This is yin and yang, ice and fire, and one of our top recommendations.

4. QuickBooks Chip and Magstripe Card Reader

The QuickBooks Chip and Magstripe Card Reader services support you to receive and track all types of payments—including PayPal, cash, and checks—through the app. And it syncs with your QuickBooks account to provide a powerful solution for mobile and desktop users who want to accept direct payments and online payments through their website.

From financial software company Intuit, GoPayment is the best mobile card reader for businesses already using QuickBooks accounting and sales software.

To use GoPayment, you need a QuickBooks account. It costs $12.50 per month and allows you to enjoy transaction fees as low as 2.4% + $0.25, which is a very decent price.

The biggest advantage for GoPayment readers and apps is their integration with Intuit's QuickBooks software. Many businesses use QuickBooks to manage payroll, inventory, sales, and other functions, so integrating your mPOS system with accounting software is a huge advantage.

The downside? GoPayment includes a higher monthly fee, and the service does not offer contactless payments to readers. That means you won't be able to process Apple Pay, Android Pay, or any other "touchless" form of payment.

Because of this, GoPayment's QuickBooks integration can offset higher monthly service fees as your transactions are automatically recorded and synced with your bookkeeping software.

5. PayPal Zettlen - PayPal Chip and Swipe Reader

The PayPal Zettle and PayPal Here apps are great for handling online and in-person sales—especially if you need to take over and need funds the next day.

PayPal Zettle is one of the best mobile credit card request terminals. All PayPal mobile credit card processors are Bluetooth-enabled, which gives you the flexibility to accept payments anywhere within range of your mobile device.

As a PayPal Here user, you can get free Chips and Swipe Readers when setting up your plan. It costs just $79.99—one of the cheapest three-in-one devices we could find. PayPal Here also lets you receive checks via the iPhone, Android, or Windows mobile app.

The swipe transaction fee is 2.7% + $0.30 per transaction and PayPal does not charge any subscription fees. Best of all, the PayPal reader and mPOS system integrates seamlessly with the popular merchant service PayPal—making it easy to accept direct and online payments from anywhere.

Out of the Gate, PayPal Here has no next day earnings, but has alternative solutions you can choose from. If you sign up for a PayPal Business Debit MasterCard ® , you can receive payments as quickly as one business day.

If your business needs the flexibility to add additional credit card terminals, consider purchasing from the PayPal POS family of products. You can get receipt printers, cash drawers, and POS device stands and cases. PayPal Here also lets you customize your profile and receipts, manage inventory, add multiple users, and access many online tools and resources.
